The two most popular treks in the region are the Lower Dolpo trek and the Upper Dolpo trek. In order to trek in the Dolpo region you’ll need a special permit to enter restricted areas. What can you experience in the Dolpo region?
The Upper Dolpo trek of 26 days and the Lower Dolpo trek of 18 days are the most popular treks in the Dolpo region. Both equally offer a unique experience in the Dolpo region and have camping included with a visit to the Phoksundu Lake. These treks go off the beaten path and luxury is not something you can expect in this remote trans-Himalayan region of Nepal. With over 190 bird and 30 mammal species spread over the region you are sure to encounter and spot some exotic animals. Such as the Himalayan griffon and the blue sheep. The famous and high valued yarsagumba can also be found here during the spring season!
The Dolpo region offers you less crowed trails, a unique camping experience, amazing natural beauty, and incredible mountain views! The two major highlights are the Shey Gompa and the Phoksundu Lake. Shey Gompa build circa the 11th century is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery also known as the Crystal Monastery. It is one of the most important landmarks in the Dolpo region and definitely worth the visit! The Phoksundu Lake is absolutely serene to behold. Laying with its clear blue waters at an altitude of 3,612m/11,849ft, this lake in the Dolpo region has over 20 stupas spread along its southern belt, with Shey Gompa in the east. On clear days one can see views of the Crystal Mountain, also known as the kid brother of Mt Everest.
